In pilgrimage cities, a shrine, as the main focal point of the city, is a factor in creation and continuation of life in the city. With the quantitative increase of pilgrims and emphasis on the quality of pilgrimage, the shrine and its related precincts have required to be developed over time. The skeletal study of the holy shrines and the urban texture surrounding them in the Shi’a world shows how the spiritual and devotional relationship between the Imam and his followers (ma’mūm) has been shaped in the form of open, semi-open and closed precincts in a harmonious hierarchy. The main question of the present research is: “What is the appropriate model for the development of shrines in relation to the city and on what criteria can it be explained?” Examining and analyzing the existing experiences provides the possibility to achieve a worthwhile alphabet in this field. Paying attention to pilgrimage rituals is considered among the essentials in the formation of this model. In this article, the author tries to introduce the principles and criteria of such a model. The research method is qualitative analysis, and through logical reasoning, the developments in the existing samples are analyzed and critiqued, through which, qualitative criteria are obtained.
As an achievement, the article proposes a new approach in the development of holy shrines, which is based on a kind of flexibility of the urban texture versus the shrine. This idea is focused on the proximity of the pilgrim to the Imam. In this respect, it provides more possibilities for development, convenient and close access to the shrine, and connection with the city.
