The changes in today's societies have led to the rise of cities that are not able to meet all human needs, especially the higher-level needs. The cities of the contemporary world, at best, provide physiological and safety needs; whereas today, the thinkers of all societies consider ignoring higher levels of human needs, such as the need for self-transcendence and spirituality to be the source of many urban disorders. Useful researches have been conducted – both inside and outside the country – concerning the relationship between the city and spirituality and the design of spiritual environments, which are devoid of some important premises. In order to enjoy a spiritual city, we have to pass through a relatively difficult path. First, we must clarify our intention of and expectation from the spiritual city and its relationship with the urban community and spiritual needs, then accordingly, we should see what definition of spirituality befits the urban planning in the current globalized world, and in order to implement that definition and planning the city and the constructed environments, what stages should we go through and what conditions and prerequisites should we provide so that thereafter the urban planning artists and architects could create a spiritual city with their designs. Although the author of the present article does not claim to have final and definite responses for these issues, he hopes to be able to make the necessary preparations to reach a spiritual city by adopting a social approach and by taking into consideration the researches conducted on the city and spirituality and with the help of a rational method provide a scholarly ground for thinking and speculating about it.
