Studies on the Islamic city are challenging due to the vast scope of the topic and the diversity of its manifestations, capturing the attention of many researchers. The historical evolution of Islamic cities, the visible transformations they have undergone, and the geographical and environmental diversity of the Islamic world have created significant ambiguities in this field. This study examines scholarly literature on Islamic cities and modernism to answer two key questions: What defines an Islamic city? How has it evolved? The research identifies obstacles to realizing an Islamic city in today's world, particularly in the face of "cultural globalization" and "economic liberalism," emphasizing a structuralist perspective. The findings indicate that research on Islamic cities has been limited by several factors, including:
The vast geographic spread of Islamic cities,
The unique historical conditions of different periods,
The diverse academic perspectives—historical, sociological, geographical, theological, political, and urban planning—applied to this topic.
Thus, any contemporary study on Islamic cities must consider modernity, cultural globalization, and economic shifts to achieve meaningful results.
